For this month’s article we had the great pleasure to invite Orange Skies for an interview. With their positive vibes and empowering songs, they are one of the best female representatives of Vienna’s music scene. During an animated chat they told us about their inspirations, greatest achievements, and future plans.
But first of all, who are the women behind Orange Skies? The band consists of singer Emilia, Celina, the guitarist, Nina, the bassist and Vicky, the drummer. Celina and Nina have known each other since they attended the same class in middle school, one with a special focus on music, which is not uncommon here in Austria. After Celina got super into rock at the age of 14, she started playing guitar in high school. She and Nina, who at that point could only play the clarinet, wanted to form a band, so the latter started learning bass. Emilia has had a passion for singing since she was a child, so she took some classical singing lessons. After a friend introduced her to the music of My Chemical Romance, she added pop and rock to her voice lessons. Emilia met Nina and Celina through the website “Bandsuche,” where they posted about looking for members, and joined them as a singer. Vicky’s starting point in rock was the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” which started her journey on the drums in the times of COVID19. Vicky and Emilia first met through their mothers, and after Vicky joined the band they began making history.
They immediately started writing songs: In the beginning it was mostly Celina and Emilia who came up with the ideas and the lyrics but as of now they are trying to work on their songs together and they emphasised how much joy this brings them especially because now each one can incorporate their own thoughts. Each of the members draw their inspiration from a variety of sources. These can change every month and could be taken from movies, musicians, or theatre plays. A few of their biggest role models in music are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and Patti Smith.
It’s undeniable that having fun is one of their main priorities for being in a band. No matter if it’s the song writing process or the gigs, they learned to laugh about their mistakes and so did the audience. This is what makes performing so special to them. The atmosphere is relaxed, the people are having a good time, and they can see that all the hard work they put into their songs pays off.
When we asked them about their proudest moment as a band, they all immediately agreed that it was playing at a small Festival in Germany where the people went wild for their performance. Another unforgettable night for them was a very chaotic gig which ended in the whole club singing along to a song about panic attacks Emilia wrote 5 years ago.
You should be excited for what the future will bring because they have plenty of projects and gigs coming up. Apart from two gigs they are playing in May, they will also perform at the Szene, a venue for live music in Vienna, in November. They are in the middle of writing new songs which gives fans, new and old, something to look forward to in anticipation. Of course, they would also love to record an album and film music videos. One thing is for sure though: No matter what these talented musicians will create one day, we are sure they will still do it with a lot of passion and excitement just as they do now. While you are waiting for them to hit us with future bangers listen to “Make out” their latest release and rock out to it.
We at Uncensored can’t wait for what they have in store for us and wish them nothing but passion, success, and fun on their adventures as heroines in the music industry.
If this has sparked your interest don’t forget to get yourself some tickets for their Gig on the 31st of May in Vienna’s “Chelsea” club!
