If Heaven Was Any Closer, I’d Still Choose You from Honestly The Worst was released about a week ago but something about it feels eerily familiar. The almost indie-like guitars, the drums that change from nearly silent to loud and the bassline are accompanied by lyrics typical for the band. They are poetic but raw and painfully straightforward. When listening to it I got pulled into a scene that most of us know in some way or another: Sitting on the bed realising that part of yourself is gone and all of the anxiety, loneliness, and heartbreak are coming back until the thoughts, desperation, pain, and anger won’t let you sit still any longer and you get pulled up and have to start screaming or else it feel like you might go crazy. The thoughts just too all consuming, just like this song. The lyrics and vocals are the closest thing to hearing a heartbreak and the realisation that this part of yourself might never come back. This tiny shred of hope tearing on your insides is invoked through lines like “And if we both died will we meet up in heaven?” This song while being different from than their others musically, captures their raw, unfiltered honesty in every second of it.
