Ride into a "Black Sunzet" with us!

In a world where female voices are often underrepresented in rock, Black Sunzet is here to change that. These girls are not only known for their garage-punk sound but also for their powerful messages on equality, empowerment, and authenticity. The trio, consisting of Jael, Johanna, and Selma, blends raw talent with bold statements, proving that girls can rock just as hard as anyone else.

The story of Black Sunzet began in a music-focused classroom, where a school project would lay the foundation for the band. Jael, who has been playing drums since the age of 5 or 6, stated that she always has been very hyperactive and drumming helps her release that energy. She also contributes backing vocals to the band, having had singing lessons during her school years.

Johanna, whose first word was quite literally a vocal exercise, was surrounded by music her whole life with a mother who is a singing teacher. She started playing cello at the age of four, continued for a decade, then played piano for a short while, but singing always remained her primary focus. For the band she then picked up the guitar, taking lessons to master the instrument.

Selma's musical story began with violin lessons, but the instrument never truly resonated with her. She transitioned to double bass and had lessons for many years. In high school, she had switched to electric bass, discovering a passion that fitted her musical taste better. Like her bandmates.

What began as a school project evolved into something much more significant. Jael and Johanna started the band, and Selma soon joined them, completing the lineup. The trio quickly bonded over a shared frustration: there were simply not enough women in rock music. Their solution? Make their voices heard, not just musically but also by addressing topics close to their hearts.

Initially, they performed cover songs, but soon they began writing their own music. Their first track was a classic heartbreak song, but as they gained confidence and experience, their songwriting expanded to cover a broader spectrum of themes. Whether it’s women’s issues, equality, or personal struggles, the band channels their emotions into their music. When life throws challenges their way, they turn them into inspiration for new songs.

Black Sunzet’s music is a mix of garage rock, punk, and a mix of various other genres. They draw inspiration from bands like The Warning—another all-female group with a similar lineup—and from other popular groups like System of a Down. When it comes to their own song writing everyone makes their contribution. Their lyrics often stem from real-life experiences and emotions, making their songs relatable.

The band’s lyrics are not only personal but also political. They address critical issues like women’s rights, body shaming, and social justice. They aim to create a safe space at their concerts, offering representation for groups that are often underrepresented or unheard. Their music serves as a platform for messages of equality and self-acceptance, encouraging their audience to be unapologetically themselves.

While the band had performed at school events, their first true gig was at Café Carina, a milestone that felt like a significant step forward. Performing alongside Johanna’s brother’s band, the experience was both nerve-wracking and thrilling. More recently, Black Sunzet participated in the first round of the Planet Festival Tour. Although there were a few hiccups, the energy was high, and the experience was invaluable.

Now that they finished school,  coordinating rehearsals has become more challenging. They no longer have easy access to the practice room at school, and with the trio now living farther apart, finding time to meet requires more planning. Promoting the band is another task that demands attention, and they are still figuring out how to navigate this aspect of being a band.

Despite these struggles, making music remains their ultimate escape. Whether it’s listening to their favorite songs or creating new ones, music is a coping mechanism and a source of joy. Songwriting, in particular, is a profound experience for them. It transports them into a creative bubble where inspiration flows, and progress feels extremely rewarding.

Through their music, Black Sunzet strives to represent groups that are often overlooked. Their songs tackle everything from gender equality to societal pressures, delivering powerful messages wrapped in catchy riffs and heartfelt melodies. They want to remind everyone that “girls can be just as loud and strong” and that music is for everyone. Their mantra is clear: “Don’t be afraid to be loud, don’t make yourself small, and don’t stay quiet.”

As Black Sunzet continues to refine their sound and build their presence, they remain committed to their mission of creating a safe, inclusive space where everyone feels seen and heard. Their journey is just beginning and as they turn up the volume, they invite everyone to listen, dance, and find strength in the noise.
