In their new single “S.Y.A.G” Drunken Pumpkins provocatively addresses the terrible situation on queer rights. I as a queer person myself interpret it as a big “Fuck you!” to homophobic people.
The Austrian punk band starts off their lyrics with quoting said intolerant individuals in the first verse. In the refrain they portrait their reaction to such problematic statements. This pattern of action and reaction continues through the song and shows that if we speak up and provoke it’s simply a reaction to oppression and hatred.
The raspy vocals, and heavy instruments with some melodic elements and an impressive solo create contrast which adds an exciting dynamic. With a raw sound Drunken Pumpkins give me a feeling of as you could call it “straight forward in your face punk” lyrically as well as instrumentally.
The song abruptly ends with the last sentence revealing the titles initials and states that people who spread hate are actually just insecure about for example their own sexuality.
